The Aberfan disaster happened on 21st October 1966 when a colliery spoil tip, after a period of heavy rain, slid down the hillside and demolished buildings in the town including Pantglas Junior School, where the day had just begun. It killed 116 children and 28 adults (109 children and 5 adults at the school).
